How to create a small garden pond in a container, pot, or tub

A pond is a pleasant, soothing, addition to any garden, yard or patio.  They attract birds and other wildlife, and children love them, too.  No matter how small your yard or your budget, you can build a pond to fit using an old cast iron bath tub, a wine or whiskey barrel, or any other suitable container that holds at least 20 to 30 gallons of water.

Once you’ve found or purchased your container, find a good place for your pond.  When it’s full of water, it will be very heavy, so make sure it has a good solid base under it.  Make sure the ground under it is packed and level, or set it on a patio or a bed of pavers. If you want to place it on a wooden deck or porch, make sure the structure can bear its weight.  Ponds like sun, so full sun to partial shade will make the plants happiest.  Also make sure there is good drainage around the container, since you will want to keep it full and add a little fresh water from time to time.

Plug any holes in your container, or line it with a pond liner to seal. If your pond will be in a wooden whiskey or wine barrel, be sure to line it with a pre-formed PVC plastic pond liner or a heavy rubber pond liner sheet. Barrels that have held fermentations can leach substances into your pond which can upset its ecological balance.  Spread a little sand or pea gravel about an inch deep in the bottom to protect the liner and give the fish something interesting to peck at.

Place concrete blocks, bricks or large rocks in one end of the tub to set marginal plants on, and to provide hidey-holes for the fish.  You can also set a broad shallow pot on the blocks to act as a bird bath.  A clay drip tray commonly used under clay pots works well for this.

Your pond is small, so don’t over-crowd it with plants, but do get a mix of water lilies, marginals and floating plants. For most container ponds, one or two water will be plenty, along with a couple small marginals like black flag iris, dwarf cattail, or arrow head, and one or two selected floating plants like water lettuce, water hyacinth, frog bit or fairy moss.

It’s best to use pots for the lilies and marginal plants, because their roots can be very invasive, and pots make maintaining the pond easier. Many garden supply stores carry inexpensive plastic mesh pots that are perfect for water plants. Soak unscented clay kitty litter to use as potting soil, or use sand or soil from the bottom of a local pond. Regular potting soil has too many particles that float that will make a mess. Place pots with water lilies in the bottom, and pots with marginals on the concrete blocks. The tops of the marginal pots should be level with the surface of the water.

Adding fish will help control mosquitoes and other bugs, and add charm and color to your pond. Feeder gold fish from the pet store are very inexpensive and survive very well in most areas without a lot of feeding or care.  For half-barrel size ponds, add up to 6 small fish, though the pond will probably only support about 3 as they grow.  For larger ponds, add a few more.  If your water source is chlorinated wait a few days after filling your pond before you add the fish.

You can also add a small solar or electric fountain, found at many garden supply centers, to add a pleasing burble to your garden and to help circulate the pond water.

Once you’ve assembled your pond, fill it with water, add the floating plants, set the fish free, and enjoy!

The Construction Industry is Looking for New Recruits

Bridging the Gap in the Construction Industry
by Tal Potishman

With green blankets covering the buildings and cranes slicing through skylines serving as a constant reminder of Britain’s building boom, it can be difficult to imagine that the commercial building industry is affected by the economic crisis. The fact that the industry is not cutting back – while other industries are – seems to indicate the explosion of new construction works have not come to an end. The problem, it seems, is a lack of workers to fill the demands of construction companies.

The dearth of skilled construction workers becomes most apparent when looking at last year’s figures. 13,000 building projects were initiated in 2007 alone, and in order to support these projects, some 18,600 labourers were needed. The deficiency in skills is therefore widespread, expanding from the trade to the non-trade. Within trades, the highest annual requirements come from the wood and the electrical trades, but demands are also high for brick-layers and construction specialists. In the non-trades, construction managers, business processing managers, architects, office-based IT recruits, and technical and professional staff are among those on high demand.

This worrying dearth is primarily due to three reasons: 1) As a result of the building boom; 2) the dwindling numbers of East Europeans in the trade; 3) the misperceptions of recruiters about what construction work involves.

The first reason, which has already been discussed above, is quite self-explanatory – the more construction projects are launched, the more recruits are needed to do the jobs.

As many of the highly-skilled workers in the British trade were often of Polish origin, the impact of the construction boom in Poland is keeping a lot of Poles at home, which is a massive loss for British construction companies.

The third reason that the UK is experiencing a worker shortage is due to recruiters’ misconceptions of what construction work actually entails.  Many job hunters perceive builders as hard-hats limited to a construction site, while in reality, a lot of construction jobs are often managerial or office-based.

Numerous steps have been taken to compensate for the lack of recruits in the trade. One approach adopted by companies is to break the predominantly white and male-dominated construction trend by trying to recruit women and individuals from various ethnic groups as well.  The National Association of Women in Construction is an example of a company that widens the recruiting net, in order to target groups with a larger range of skills and work ethics. This also creates a more diverse work place, and allows for fresh ideas to be introduced into the industry.

Programs such as Inspire Scholarships and the Sustainable Employment Legacy Forum try to increase the number of graduates entering the industry by providing student funds, training courses, and apprenticeships for people in the poorest boroughs of London. They also organise initiatives for children to visit construction sites to generate early interest in the industry.

An alternative way to gather recruits is to change the way in which the industry is viewed. By making the public aware of the fact that construction work is not just about hard hats and light-reflecting mesh jackets, more people might consider construction as a career.

The ?white Card? In Australia?s Construction Industry

The White Card is a mandatory requirement for all those employed in the construction industry in Australia. From plumbers to bricklayers, a White Card is essential.

The White Card is proof that you’ve completed the general OHS induction, created for the construction industry alone. This general OHS induction training refers to the CPCCOHS1001A ‘Work Safely in the Construction Industry’ unit.

It covers information pertaining to Workplace Health and Safety (WH&S) in industries including housing construction, civil construction, carpentry, roof, wall and floor tiling, asbestos removal, renovations and refurbishment.

Specifically the course details:

• The Workplace Health and Safety Act 1995, Workplace Health and Safety Regulation 2008 and codes of practice;
• Risk management;
• Principal contractor’s safety plan;
• Material safety data sheets;
• Work method statements;
• Causes of fires and types of controls;
• Basic emergency procedures like first aid, evacuation plans and procedures;
• Reporting hazards to relevant people at the workplace;
• Workplace Health and Safety Officers;
• Obligations of people at the workplace;
• Duty of care, and
• Recording of work injuries, work caused illness and dangerous happenings at the workplace.

Completing CPCCOHS1001A ‘Work Safely in the Construction Industry’ successfully will see you receive your White Card. It is a competency based course and does require the successful completion of assessment items in order to be finalised.

Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) are authorised to deliver the ‘Work Safely in the Construction Industry’ course. They can deliver the course online or in person.

The RTO can provide the White Card, after they’ve been provided with the following documents from the OHS trainee: a copy of the Statement of Attainment, which is available as soon as you’ve completed the course via the RTO or a printer, a Statutory Declaration form signed by you, a Justice of the Peace or Commissioner for Declaration and an observer, which can be anyone.
And a copy of your photo I.D. also signed by the Justice of the Peace, Commissioner for Declaration or legal practitioner.

If completing the training online and faxing or emailing documentation you can expect the White Card to arrive to you via post within five to seven working days.

Once you’ve successfully completed the training and obtained your White Card it will be recognised throughout Australia. As signatories to the Codes of Practice all Australian construction industry governing bodies will accept a White Card, issued in any state or territory, as proof of completion of the OHS induction training.

The White Card replaces Queensland’s Blue Card, Victoria’s Red Card, New South Wales’ Green Card and White Cards that were issued before September 2009. Some of these cards are still recognised in states and territories, regardless of the state or territory they were issued in.

Construction Advertising

The need for Construction Advertising is probably today more than ever before because the housing market is showing no signs of improvement. There are those who are saying that the worst may be behind us, and the economy is all set to grow, but then, the signs are still not that positive. Some business people of course argue that when the economy is not doing great it might be a better idea to cut costs and reduce the spending on advertising or promotions. At least this is what the accountant would recommend.

However those who are really smart advertisers do just the opposite. Robert Kiyosaki who is famous for his “Rich Dad Poor Dad” books agrees to this theory. He says that a business, even a construction business, must be marketed even more in times of trouble. Kiyosaki feels that in bad economic times, a business should boost its promotions, and not reduce the advertising budget, as many seem to do.

Reason # 1 Why Construction Advertising Can Work In A Down-Economy

Many businesses that are into construction advertising reduce their marketing budget when the economy is not booming, and this offers you a great opportunity. The fact is, when everyone is advertising, there is far too much to pay attention to one. There is so much advertising that your advertisement is sure to be lost in the maze if that is you are not spending a lot of money to buy prime time television spots everyday and full page insertions in the newspaper at least once a week.

Very Few Advertisers Can Afford To Spend This Kind Of Money

On the other hand, when no one seems to be advertising, there are a lot of vacant positions, and so the chances are that your efforts at trying to reach your customers is bound to get noticed. Since very few advertisers are advertising, the rates are sure to go down too – you can buy the same spots for less and save money.

Reason # 2 Construction Advertising For Genuine Leads

Advertisers often complain that leads do not convert into customers. This is because most people are basically casual buyers. When the economy is not doing well, the number of such casual buyers or inquiries also goes down remarkably. The fact is, most people who are calling the company are actually interested. So promoting the business here can lead to better sales.

Using The Internet For Construction Advertising

The construction business can also be promoted through online websites and in many ways this is highly beneficial. Over the last few years there has been a definite shift in the way consumers are searching. There was a time when people used to look up newspaper advertisements and yellow pages for whatever they needed. But now many of them have decided to search the Internet as it is often more convenient. This is one reason why almost all the newspapers have a website, and the Yellow Pages are today on the Web.

So In conclusion it can be said a business should never stop construction advertising, even when it seems that the economy might not be doing that great. And on top of that, it is essential for the business to explore all possible channels of marketing too for gaining maximum mileage.

How to Remove Concrete Paint

Step1

Safety is first so prepare by putting on protective clothing and equipment including acid resistant gloves, protective goggles and an air purifying respirator. Any nearby foliage should be protected with drop cloths.

Step2

The concrete paint remover can be bought at most hardware stores and should be shaken very well before opening. Once the remover is opened it should be stirred, if the water has separated. The remover can be poured into a paint tray or into an airless sprayer at this time.

Step3

Before jumping right into a project, a small area should be tested first to determine the time needed to remove the paint and whether the remover chosen is suitable for the project.

Step4

After testing an area and determining reactivity time, the rest of the paint can be covered with the remover using a paintbrush or an airless sprayer. A paint roller is not suggested due to the remover that can splash off onto the person applying the remover. A thick, even layer should be applied that covers the entire covered surface.

Step5

Once the coating starts to wrinkle, then the paint is ready to remove. A pressure washer can be used to remove the paint but a squeegee or scraper is preferable to avoid the coating and residue from making a bigger mess. Sometimes additional coats of remover are needed to remove all paint.

Step6

Finally, now that all of the remover and coating is removed, all surfaces should be rinsed with cool water to remove any remaining residue. The surface must be cleaned and dry before applying a new coating of paint.

Final Words:

Most removers work in as little as an hour or two but can take up to four or five hours according to environmental factors such as heat and humidity.
The surface should remain wet while the remover is working. If an area becomes dry, apply a light coat to dry areas.
If the remover comes in contact with any other surfaces or items rinse immediately with water.
Protective equipment should be used at all times while working with a remover due to most removers being acid based and due to the fact that some older paints might include lead and could release lead dust.

Construction Jobs – The Benefits Of Working In The Construction Industry

The construction industry is a booming industry indeed. New and innovative designs for buildings and modern day equipment and techniques make it an exciting career choice. The construction industry has a workforce that is continually growing.

The average age these days of a construction worker, be it a carpenter, an electrician or a brick mason is 47. This means that the industry is in dire need of some new workers entering the field. If the average age is 47, this means in less than 15 years those workers will be eligible for retirement, if not sooner. The world will always need new buildings erected, so the skills of construction person will always remain in demand.

Construction industry offers many career opportunities and many benefits. When you work within construction industry, you will be a member of a very important team and you will be making a difference to your community.
